 Foxes and Bears

August 27, 2021

The class experienced our first great lesson this year.  The lesson includes stories and experiments about the creation of the universe.  We will be exploring the scientific method this year and the children will be using their very own science journals to track their results.  Next week we are looking forward to watching some of our research groups present their work related to Japan.

The children will be bringing home their folders today (Friday). These folders will hold paper work that the children complete each week as well as any papers that need to come home for you to read (most everything is online now so there should not be a lot coming home).  Additionally, this folder also contains your child's reading log, a schedule of the day, and a cursive writing guide.  The only homework that the children are expected to do is to read or be read to for 20 minutes each night.  This reading should be documented on the reading log.  This can be removed from the folder to be completed and sent back when it is full.  Folders should be sent back to school each Monday to be returned home the following Friday.  Thank you ahead for assisting your child to make reading a habit.

We are so excited to have most of the children back in the classroom.  We are hoping for full classes by next week!  Our study of Japan is leading us to explore the history of calligraphy and the children will be working with a friend as they research many aspects of the country.

The water fountains here in the building are off limits due to Covid 19.  However, we do have water bottle fillers throughout the building that the children can use.  Please make sure that your child brings a water bottle to school each day that they can refill and use when they are thirsty.

Please make sure that your student brings their computer and headphones to and
from school each day if they have permission to take them home.  There are times when they will need them in the school building.

Fox and Bear Community

Our study of Asia has begun.  Japan will be our focus for this week.

Thank you so much for helping us to keep the children engaged this week!  It has been a challenge indeed.  We hope to see everyone return to school on Monday after they receive a negative Covid test result. Please be sure to send a digital copy of your child's test result to Nurse Chris ASAP.  If your child is not returning to school next week please make sure that they join us for meetings at 8:30 and 2:30 each day next week.  Your children can also continue to complete journals and follow up work throughout the week on It's Learning.

Workplans

The children will be starting the use of workplans next week.  They will begin planning and recording their daily work.  If possible, please send in a clipboard for your child to keep their workplan on.  We do have some spare clipboards if your child is unable to bring one.

Testing
The children will be completing the AMIRA test and the I-ready assessment over the next couple of weeks.  As always, please make sure that your children are well rested and prepared to do their very best.

Technology Matters

Student Learning Device Loan Form and FPP Information (This form MUST be filled out by a parent/guardian for EVERY student)- These will be available in your classroom at Open House or you can fill out the digital version at this link.
Additionally, the district is offering a Family Protection Plan (FPP) for the devices this year for only $25. The FPP will cover accidental damage (not loss or theft) of the device and provide up to TWO replacement devices this school year. Please note that the cost of device repairs (if the FPP is NOT purchased) has increased due to demand for the parts (a Chromebook screen replacement, our most common repair, is now $90!), so we HIGHLY recommend that you purchase the FPP for each student's device.

The FPP can be purchased through School Cash Online. You will find instructions on how to register for School Cash Online and connect your student(s) to your account here.

The children are continuing to enjoy getting to know each other this week.  We are learning routines and getting back into the swing of sharing space and ideas.  Next week the children will begin using work plans and individual and small group lessons will begin.  Our upcoming cultural lessons will include the science behind the first great lesson (The Coming of the Universe), and we will also start a unit on the continent of Asia.  If you have any Asian artifacts please let us know so that we can share them over the coming month(s).

The classrooms can be cool at times.  It is a great idea to send a sweater or zip up sweatshirt in your child's bookbag so that they can be comfortable throughout the day.  However, the dress code does forbid pullover hooded sweatshirts so please refrain from allowing your child to wear these to school.

Technology Matters

If your child currently has a laptop computer checked out from the school please return it (with the charger), as soon as possible so the devices can be checked in, cleaned, and checked back out to your student.  For your information:

One or our 3rd grade students became an award winning author this past Spring/ Summer.  We are all inspired to do our best writing after watching Annie read her story for Georgia Public Broadcasting.  To view the author reading her great piece of work, click the link below!
