Fox and Bear Community

We have had a great time exploring pumpkins and the history of Halloween this week.  The children estimated the number of seeds in our pumpkin, graphed what type of face to carve, and made Venn diagrams about historical Halloween compared to modern day Halloween.

Ellis Families,
The Charles Ellis Montessori Academy PTA is thrilled to announce we will be sponsoring our 10th Annual Read-A-Thon for our students. All proceeds from the Read-A-Thon will support our school. This year, we will be raising funds to purchase updated Montessori Materials that will be circulated through the media center for classroom use. Not only will the funds benefit our school, but students will also enjoy time reading (and it is something that can be done as a family). We hope the time your family spends participating in this Read-A-Thon will encourage a love of reading and time spent together supporting a good cause. What Minutes Count? • Reading before and after school counts • Reading before the official beginning of the Read-A-Thon does not count • Reading during class does not count • Being read to by other people counts • Reading aloud to a pet counts • Reading aloud to other people counts. (If you happen to read to someone who is also participating in the Read-A-Thon, it counts for both of you!) • Homework reading counts • Reading under the bed covers, with a flashlight, late at night counts (but only if it is okay with your parents)! Prizes! • Any student, who raises $100 or more, will receive a $10.00 gift certificate to the Scholastic Book Fair in the media center, which will take place December 6-10, 2021. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Ms. Lisa (lisa.odonnell@sccpss.com). Thank you so much!

This has been a fun week in the classroom.  The children worked cooperatively to make geometric solids using clay and toothpicks.  The children are also working collectively to make a time line of space exploration.  We are looking forward to seeing this time in history illustrated by the students.

A giant thank you from Ms. Jess to the students and parents that made her cards and/or dropped off gifts to cheer her up as one of her dear dogs stopped living this week.  She greatly appreciates your thoughtfulness and the children expressed their sympathy in unique and beautiful ways.  Oro will be missed but not forgotten.

Masks must be worn by children at all times in the school building except while they are eating or drinking.  Please make sure that your child is wearing a mask when he/she leave you in the morning and also that they have at least one extra mask in their backpack in case their original mask becomes wet or soiled.  The children should wear a freshly washed mask each day or they can also wear a new disposable mask each day.  We have extra disposable masks on hand but they we do go through them quickly so your assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated.

The classes have been studying Haiku this week.  Haiku writing consists of a syllable pattern of 5-7-5.  The children are currently writing their own Haikus.  We created this Haiku together as a class.

We are delving further into our study of the solar system.  The children will be exploring all of the planets and other elements contained in the universe in the coming weeks.  If they show special interest in a specific element please encourage them to explore it further at home and present their findings to the class.

If you do not wish to keep your student's photo package, please return them to school by the Thursday of this week!

The students have been researching interesting buildings/structures in China.  They are now beginning to make replicas of the structures using recycled materials.  Please discuss this project with your child and check to see if needed materials might be in your recycling bins.  The children will begin presenting these projects next week.  We will be sure to post pictures of the finished projects!

Please help your child to remember to plug in their computer each afternoon when they return home.  We do not have enough outlet space to charge computers coming from home each day.  Please also make sure that your child has a set of earbuds or headphones to keep in their backpack on a daily basis.  The children do not spend a lot of time on their devices during the school day but they do need to be prepared for research and working in i-ready. Thank you so much for helping with this!
