 Fox and Bear Learning Community

January 29, 2021

The class has begun the study of animals on the tree of life!  This is the largest group of living beings.  Each week we will be exploring a different kingdom of animals.   Next week we will also begin an in-depth study and celebration of black historical figures.   Please assist your child in exploring the Black History section of the cultural plans.

Please note that Ms. Jess and Ms. Kirsten hold office hour from 7:30-8:30 each morning! This is a time for both students and parents to come in with questions, ask for assistance with work or we can also help students plan their days, or just chat.  We are happy to see those that take advantage of this time.

This coming week we are going to try something new.  At 1:30 we would like to see the first grade students for a skill review session.  If all goes well, we will add a session for other levels as well.

We are also trying something new with our Number of the Week.  Students will find a link in the announcements on Monday to Google slides.  They should have it opened when entering Morning Meeting.  They should find their slide (each is labeled with a name) and begin working on answering.  If some prefer to continue to use paper, that is fine.  We will go over the answers together after a few minutes.

Materials
Please assist children in having work materials available when in group time and/or during lessons.  These materials should include paper, pencils, crayons or colored pencils, scissors, glue, and a ruler.  A box can easily hold these items for ease of organization.  We have one student that uses a tackle box and it works really well!

The children have completed their i-ready assessments and they will now start on their learning paths!  The paths are made specifically for each child to focus on their strengths and areas of needed growth.  Your child will need to work 3 times a week for 30 minutes to see the full spectrum of expected growth.  Do not hesitate to contact us if you or your child have any questions about the program or need assistance in logging in.

Dear Parents,

I wish to inform you that I have reached out to the district office to secure a substitute teacher for Spanish. You may have experienced  some interruption to the normal schedule, due to Ms. Colleen’s absence. I am working with the World Languages department to secure for our adolescents someone that can also facilitate Spanish 1, which is a high school credit course. I will let you know when we have a substitute in place. I ask for your patience and compassion at this time, as Ms. Colleen and her family deal with a family emergency.

Peace, Ms. Tanya

Is there a fungus among us?  The children will be exploring the kingdom of fungi this week for their Tree of Life work.  We will be growing mushrooms in the classroom and observing their growth on a daily basis. The children will also be participating in growing their own fungus by putting bread in a bag.  We look forward to seeing the differences between the types of bread, where we stored them, and how and when the fungus starts to grow.  Please assist your child in observing and recording the results of this fun experiment.

The Foxes and Bears Community did an amazing job raising funds for the Boosterthon this year!  Between the classes, over $100 per minute danced was raised!  Thank you to all of the families and friends that supported us throughout this fundraiser! The children have earned the following rewards:

Friday:    Crazy Socks and Hat Day

Monday: Game Day (after read-aloud)

Tuesday:  Charades (after read-aloud)

Thursday: Animal (real or stuffed) to share (after read-aloud)

This week we explored the smallest group of life forms on the Tree of Life.  Our cultural work is focusing on Prokaryotes and Protists.  The children have the choice to study viruses and/or cells throughout the coming week.  Next week we will begin learning about fungi with a group experiment to come on Thursday.  Please pick up some white bread on your next shopping trip to prepare for the experiments on Thursday.

Creative Writing Contest

The weekend is here! This weekend we have a special challenge!

When your students get $2 per lap (which is
$60
total in flat donations) or more in NEW pledges over the weekend, they’ll earn their regular rewards PLUS a bonus reward.

Boosterthon Dancefit will take place on Wednesday, January 20th

The children have currently read 3,500 books on EPIC!  Way to go Foxes and Bears!!!

The children will be participating in a diagnostic assessment to prepare them to use i-Ready  throughout the week of January 25th-29th.  This assessment will be used to guide their instruction so please encourage your children to take their time BUT DO NOT ASSIST them.  A letter has been e-mailed giving more information.  Please read the letter carefully and notice the schedule that has been set for that week.  The third grade students will also begin preparing for the GMAS (Georgia Milestone Assessment System) next week.  We will be working with them on how to use the program each Wednesday at 8:30 in a Zoom session.  This session is for 3rd grade students only.
